About the work
Ricardo Mbarkho’s camera assumes the role of a surveillance camera, continuously recording an ordinary space. Everything seems subjected to the logic of surveillance until a couple enters the camera’s field of view. The two individuals move closer to one another and dare to perform an act of resistance. This gesture, both intimate and political, subverts the device’s original function. The image intended for surveillance becomes, against its own purpose, a site where love and freedom manifest themselves.
Without violence or direct confrontation, the couple opposes the logic of control through the power of an emotional presence. A poetic form of resistance thus emerges from within the surveillance system itself. The device remains intact, but its function is subverted. Love becomes an act of disobedience, and the image of control becomes a space for artistic creation.
