The cover image is a work by Ricardo Mbarkho. He starts from a text, here the Book of Genesis, and submits it to the computer, instructing the machine to read the text as if it were an image. Turned into an image through the binary codes of computing, the Book of Genesis reveals what is essential in it, beneath words and their meaning. The authors chose this work, made from the book at the origin of all books, for the cover of a study of the transformations of the cultural industries.

From the catalogue, page 58, by Ricardo Echevarría, curator of Ricardo Mbarkho’s solo exhibition [Since Art]: “Lebanese artist Ricardo Mbarkho’s work talks about communication between human beings. To be more precise, it talks about the difficulties of carrying it out. That is why many of his texts are transformed into images (Visualizing Communication, 2008; Digital Visuals from Lebanon, 2008) or video sequences in which words are missing (More than normal, 2002), or the opposite, online discussion forums where noise can mute the significance of the topic being discussed (Lebanese Group, 1999–2001). The interest of his work lies in the conceptualization and de-dramatization of (in)communication, which has a more significant value because Ricardo’s life and artistic activity are located in an area of ongoing geopolitical conflict, Beirut. […] This is the first solo exhibition in Spain by Ricardo Mbarkho. The exhibited works go from 1999 until today. They all question human relations and communication, within the private and the public sphere. […]”
